“Big Salmon” is the word throughout the river system this season and we hear the case on many Maritime rivers which bodes well for the future stock of the great Atlantic Salmon! This past week saw some warmer days but with a nice rain at the end of week, the river conditions were maintained. This season although the river level has tended to be higher than normal, it certainly helps both the salmon and the anglers in terms of enabling good conditions through July. We know warmer days will come as usual, but it looks like we’re going to keep receiving sprinkles of water that will keep fish moving throughout the system. This season the fish have not had to slow down very much on their journey upriver!

Many big salmon have been lost once again this week with one of our guests hooking into a giant one, playing it for while as it put up an epic battle! The guest was not able to bring it to the net as hard as they tired and had to chase it 100s of meters downriver just to get back some line. Country Haven guide Jeremy Vickers was at his side until the fish finally decided that it had enough and was gone! Jeremy has lived on the SW Miramichi River his entire life, guiding for most of it, and he said this fish was one of the biggest salmon that he has ever witnessed!!! It sure would’ve been nice to see how big the beast really was and as we all know … the big ones are always the ones that got away! lol

This past week we continued to see more grilse in the river system which is the norm for the July run of fish which usually meant fun hookups for our anglers. Grilse tend to be more apt to take a fly compared to the bigger salmon

Now with the river being in great shape for this time of year we stand to have some great fishing in late July and into August. We hope that the fish returns continue and that catches stay steady throughout summer. While many think late June and early July can be the best window for fishing, when we have such good conditions like we have now, the good fishing will likely continue. In fact some years August has proven to be a great month provided the heat doesn’t overwhelm things and we continue to get some rain along the way! So if you’re thinking bout returning or trying your hand for Atlantic salmon on the Miramichi 2022, this is the year! And if we can’t accommodate you we will do what we can to try to find another lodge to get you on the Miramichi fishing and making wonderful salmon fishing memories!
