Atlantic Salmon, the “King” of Gamefish.

Located on one of the best Atlantic Salmon rivers in the world, fishing for Atlantic Salmon is our number one activity. From First Timers to lifelong anglers - thousands of guests from around the world come here every season to enjoy the beauty of the region and the thrill of catching the “King” of Gamefish, the Wild Atlantic Salmon.

At Country Haven, our certified guides introduce you to the world of fly-fishing for Wild Atlantic Salmon. Of all the angling sports, fly-fishing is the most passionate among anglers worldwide. There really isn’t anything in the fishing world more delicate than a dry fly slowly drifting in the current, or more powerful than a 'tug' from below the surface as the magnificent Wild Atlantic Salmon hits your fly! Absolutely nothing can compare to the excitement of that very first fish taken on a fly.

The Wild Atlantic Salmon is a renowned world traveler, spawning in freshwater but spending most of its life in the ocean. After one or more years at sea, the Atlantic Salmon returns to its home river to spawn, in an extraordinary journey that may span more than 4,000 km of ocean. After spawning they again return back to the sea the following spring and may return to the river where they were born a number of times throughout their lifespan, each time increasing in size and strength, providing a greater challenge to the fishermen.

The wild Atlantic Salmon is commonly known among fishermen as the "King" of game fish. Is it any wonder why many travel, on an annual basis, from around the world, to fish for this much sought-after species?

The Miramichi also offers good trout and striped bass fishing and we fish these two species of gamefish throughout the season.

  • April 15th - May 15th

In spring, most fishing is done from boats - normally one angler to one guide. The spring is very active because salmon are feeding and there are good numbers in the river system.

In April, the method used is sinking lines or sinking tips. In May, depending on conditions, its big streamer flies. Sinking lines, sinking tips & floating lines will also be used with smaller-sized streamer flies.

We are ideally located for some of the better spring fishing as we are far enough upriver for all the fish to swim by but low enough in the system for them to hold up while entering the tidal waters.

  • May 16th - Oct 15th

During summer and fall, most fishing is done by wading, however, boat fishing is still available for those who prefer it.

Using 8-9 wt. rods, both Spey or Single Handed casting, with floating lines and wet or dry flies depending on conditions - that are the techniques used for catching these fresh Wild Atlantic Salmon as they arrive in the system from the sea.

In the summer and fall, the Atlantic Salmon are not feeding but take flies out of pure instinct. Salmon up to 30+ lbs. are landed annually on the system. The Miramichi contains a lot of private fishing water so we pride ourselves in offering guests some of the best private salmon pools for fishing which produces the best success rate.

  • May 1st - Sep 15th

Trout season on the Miramichi River system, is the most productive between May 1st to early July.

In May, most trout fishing is done - similar to Salmon fishing - from boats, with sinking tip streamer flies used mostly in the faster water stretches of the Main River system. From June into early July, the Cains river is best using 4-7 wt. fly rods and floating lines with dry flies.

It is possible to catch trout in the system weighing up to 4-5 Lbs!

  • May 1st - Oct 15th

The Miramichi has an abundance of Wild Striped Bass in the system which can be fished using a number of different methods, but non much better than using a dry fly. We fish for them in the lower stretches of the system and tidal water from Mid May on.

  • June 1st - June 30th

The Miramichi River system offers an excellent Shad run throughout the month of June, providing a fantastic fishing experience. With anglers often landing double-digit catches, it’s a prime destination for any avid fly fisherman looking to enjoy a rewarding and exciting season on the water.

“Country Haven has the best guides on the Miramichi. I worked as a fishing guide here in Ontario for nearly 30 years before I retired, so believe me when I say these guys are second to none. They keep me coming back year after year.”
