Sunshine and fishing make for good times on the Miramichi River and with some big feisty trout and an abundance of salmon jumping all over the river, it has made for some great days of fishing on the river! The salmon have been jumping all over, although the catching of them has become tougher over the past few days as water has been dropping and they move down the system towards the bay. There are still plenty of them in the system however and anglers are still managing to hook some farther down river as the striped bass now start to move up. Most anglers are landing large numbers of bass now and choosing to keep their allowed quota for our cooks to fry up!
There has been multiple anglers this week hit the jackpot and score a Country Haven Grand Slam by landing a trout, a salmon and a striped bass all in the same day! Overall it has and continues to be a great season and we are seeing good numbers of trout in the system all the way from the tidal waters and above, with many being in the 1 -3 lb. range! Let’s hope that the trout can make a comeback after the past few years where their numbers seemed to be down. Soon enough the bright sea run trout will be coming in and not long after hopefully a few Rocky Brook salmon, which make up part of the first run of salmon for the summer season!
Until the fresh fish arrive, our focus will turn more to the striped bass although anglers still stand a good chance to hook a salmon in the tide water as they migrate out. Floating lines with sinking tips will now give anglers their best shot at hooking into a spring salmon! Get out there and have some fun!
