As the Spring season rolls along, many anglers are still leaving at the end of their trip with smiles on their faces after hooking and landing some beautiful spring kelts. Although a raise in the river height and cold chilly days made fishing tough mid-week, once the water dropped again the fishing picked up and even though there haven’t been any extraordinary days of fishing it has been consistent, with all of our guests getting into some action even on the few days that we experienced poor weather. With spring salmon still being landed 60 miles up river, it is looking like anglers will still stand a good chance of hooking salmon well into late May as the big healthy salmon migrate down river to the ocean. Although by late May, the spring fishery can get somewhat tougher with fewer fish dropping down in the system, the remaining salmon can prove to be the best fighting fish during the spring season after they have been feasting for weeks on baitfish which rejuvenates an energizes them again!

This past week we welcomed back a group that has come to the Miramichi for 50 years and 20 seasons to Country Haven, with the exception of the lost covid years. They all had another successful trip and even though they had to cope with a few chilly days and a raise of water during their time here, they are already looking forward to returning again next season! (a bit like our salmon! lol) It is worth noting that one of our guests this past week, Alex Krotinger, saved a goose nest and 5 of her precious eggs from being flooded by the rising water (yes the mama goose approved), and she was rewarded the next day, landing two beautiful salmon … good karma is a real thing apparently! Thanks Alex for your kindness and your helping hand to a Mother Goose and to Mother Nature!

We also had a return visit from the Hunter family from Quispamsis, New Brunswick who had a wonderful trip again this year landing a few fish, feeding the cows and enjoying some wonderful family time back on the Miramichi! Throughout the year we are so lucky to have many returning guests to Country Haven, all of whom have a special place in our hearts. We consider ourselves very blessed to have such great people frequent our lodge and we love creating wonderful memories with our extended family!

As the spring season passes, a few of our anglers are now being fortunate enough to land salmon, trout and striped bass all in the same day, which we affectionately call a “Country Haven Miramichi Grand Slam”! Warmer days are starting now and as they arrive the water temps are increasing which brings the striped bass into the tidal waters where we guide and each day produces more and more big number bass hooking days! One of our angling parties guide landed over 50 stripers, a couple of beautiful trout and 4 salmon … now that’s what we call a busy and great day of fishing!
