A Great Finish to September on the Miramichi
What a great couple of weeks we had to finish off September here at Country Haven. Even with the lower water, many of the holding pools throughout the lower stretches of the Miramichi were holding good numbers of both Salmon and Grilse.
Most of our visitors over the past couple of weeks were returning guests, some who have been fishing with us for close to 20 years. While we may not have landed as many fish as we should have, and certainly not as many as during some of the previous weeks, one thing nearly everyone agreed on was just how many fish they were seeing. Several longtime guests commented that they haven't seen this many Salmon and Grilse in the river for years, which is certainly encouraging as we head into the final weeks of the season.
We welcomed Anglers from England, Switzerland, Ireland and Wales, along with guests from several U.S. States and Canadian Provinces. Throughout their stays, our guests fished 12 different private low water pools from Quarryville upriver toward Doaktown, and fish were showing in most of them. That's always a great sight on the Miramichi.
It has been a while since we have been able to spend much time on the Cains because of the low water. We are still hoping for a good fall rain that will bring the Cains up and give us another opportunity to fish what many consider their favourite fall salmon river.
September is also always special for me personally, as I get to finish the month celebrating my birthday with old friends, returning guests and, this year, quite a few fish as well. There aren't many better ways to celebrate.
On the fly side, the smaller summer patterns are still producing, while the traditional fall flies are becoming increasingly effective. GPs, Shrimp patterns and Red Frances have all been doing well as the season moves into October.
With only a couple of weeks remaining before the October 15 close, there are plenty of fish in the system. Now we just need a little rain and some good fall fishing weather to finish another Miramichi season on a high note.
Tight lines from all of us at Country Haven!
