Another Great Week on the Miramichi

Overall, this past week saw some very good fishing on the Miramichi, but one of the real highlights was our 4th Annual Miramichi Women’s Fly Fishing Retreat.

What a weekend! We are filled with a tremendous sense of gratitude after welcoming 21 amazing ladies to Country Haven. New friendships were made, old friendships strengthened, and there was plenty of laughter, incredible meals, great instruction, beautiful weather and, of course, time spent fishing the Miramichi.

These retreats just seem to get better every year. The guides had so much fun they are now requesting that we turn Country Haven into a ladies-only lodge, LOL!

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the weekend so special, starting with our guides and especially Ian Cavanaugh for putting everything together, our fantastic kitchen team, and all of the wonderful sponsors who continue to believe in this retreat and help make it possible: Miramichi Salmon Association, Brad Burns Fly Fishing, Miramichi Renous Club, Hooké, Paul M. White, Alan Bourgault Woodworking, Graystone Brewing, Curtis Miramichi Outfitters and Gary Berenson.

But most of all, thank you to the 21 women who chose to spend their weekend with us.

The Miramichi has always been about bringing people together, and this weekend it did exactly that once again. Thank you all for making our 4th Annual Women’s Retreat so incredibly special.

Here’s to the Miramichi. Here’s to the Salmon. Here’s to Friendship. And most of all: Here’s to #5!

On the Fishing Front

Everyone who fishes for Wild Atlantic Salmon knows that catching one on a Fly, especially during the Summer and Fall, is never guaranteed. Atlantic Salmon, along with Permit, are sometimes called the “Fish of a Thousand Casts.”

But every now and then, the River has other plans.

This week, Richard Bennett from Cambridge, Ontario, showed us exactly that when he hooked an Atlantic Salmon on only his Fifth Cast. That is certainly one way to start a Miramichi fishing trip!

With the continued low water conditions, smaller summer fly patterns are still producing nice Salmon and Grilse for our guests. #8 and #10 Bear Hairs, Undertakers and Mac Attacks remain among the flies of choice.

The lower stretches of the Main Southwest Miramichi continue to provide good holding water, and we are seeing fish in a number of pools. Some rain would certainly be welcome now to freshen things up and improve conditions in the upper river pools and tributaries.

We still have several weeks of Fall Fishing ahead of us, and with cooler September weather settling in, we look forward to seeing what the Miramichi brings next.

Tight Lines from everyone at Country Haven!
