October 15th, 2022 ~ End Of Season Report
As the last week drew to a end on the Miramichi River, anglers experienced a bit of rain on the last day of the season which seemed to light up the salmon! It was truly remarkable, with anglers throughout the river system seeing lots of fish! Anglers on pools of the lower end of the river above the tidal water saw close to 100 fish jumping and rolling into the system and many fish on the Cains moved further up the river system. The last day of the season made for the most action of the entire fall season, and with so many salmon on the move, it makes a person wonder what the days after close of the season would be like for angling and many guests wishing they could’ve stayed for a few more days!
Many anglers this past week had great success, while others were only seeing fish. Malcolm Brandon who decided to stay an extra day due to his great week on the river had yet another successful day! And Allen Magrini limited out multiple days and Roland Fitzgerald who was back for his second trip of the season had more success on what we now call the Roland Special Fly! Anglers like the Ruckno boys from Pennsylvania, who have been coming to the Miramichi for 40 years, had success landing many beautiful fall hens and grilse over the final few days. They commented that they saw the most salmon that they ever had on the last day of the season! Many of our fall guests also enjoyed the wildlife that our region has to offer with daily sightings of moose, white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, red foxes and rabbits.
As rain fell on the final day of the season, and with more expected in the coming weeks, it should allow for the salmon to keep migrating farther upstream to reach quality habitat for spawning. With the large numbers of big salmon in the river system this year, it should contribute to the health of the stocks on the Miramichi and we certainly hope that the Mighty Miramichi continues to be a salmon angling destination for years to come!
Another season is in the books on the Miramichi river and here at Country Haven Miramichi we had a wonderful year overall. Our guests, guides and anglers enjoyed an almost normal year post pandemic for guests , guides and although there were challenging periods during the season due to conditions, the majority of the time anglers enjoyed successful fishing for salmon & the other species including brook trout and striped bass. With the good numbers of salmon returning to the river throughout the season, it already has many folks already looking forward to April 15th for the start another spring fishing season which we believe should be a successful one!
On behalf of our Country Haven family, we would like to thank our many returning clients and newcomers alike, who all quickly become part of our family. We consider ourselves very fortunate to operate a lodge where this is possible and we are already looking forward to our 2023 season! In addition to our many valued guests, we would also like to extend a big thank you to our entire Country Haven team of guides, kitchen staff and cleaning staff … these are the folks who make Country Haven Miramichi what it is and we are so fortunate to have them as colleagues and friends! Until next spring … tight lines!
