This past week at Country Haven Lodge was the week of male salmon with lots of angler success landing grilse. Flies of choice this week were the Bonnie Bell, Undertakers and Ally Shrimps. Long time guest Roger Lailey from England landed a real life dinosaur which he seems to have a knack for doing every fall. Roger has been coming to Country Haven Lodge for over 10 years, spring and fall seasons, only missing the covid years. He fishes many times a year on home rivers in Scotland, while waiting for his time to get back on the Miramichi to try his hand where he loves to give his guide Jeremy some teasing … and as is the case with many of our guests, their friendship goes way past just netting salmon while on the river. The Miramichi is a special place for making lifetime friends along with great fishing memories!

Many of the fish this week have been caught in pools where anglers were seeing any fish movement which goes to show that sometimes the fish are still there, even when their not taking! And with right fly, presented the right way, at the right time, things can line up and magic happens … that is why you can never give up casting for Atlantic salmon.

While most of our anglers were spending time on the Cains River this week, not many folks were fishing the lower stretches of the Main Southwest River but word from a few of the locals is that they are they are seeing some fish holding in pools and also some other fresh ones moving through. With each passing day there seems to be more signs of the fall run starting and with the full moon tonight this should be the real start for the fall run coming into the Miramichi and Cains and we are looking forward to a promising fall for our anglers!
