This past week some camps along the river people started to see a few fresh salmon and even managed to land a few with with sea lice, giving hope for the start of our fall run. We did however have the start of the season interrupted with a heat wave that set the river back some again although after a few scorching days, the weather once again turned to more seasonal conditions. The river cooled to very fishable temperatures and we even managed to get some much needed rain last week which bumped up the main river by about 8 inches. We hope that even this small bump in water might trigger some more fish to start running up the river but at a pace in the lower sections where they pase as the various pools as they make their way up to their spawning grounds.
We always look forward to the fall to welcome back many returning guests, all of whom have become close friends with our team at Country Haven. We once again welcomed back 95 year old Charlie Mosher, his 85 year old brother Bob, and 74 year old friend Robert. They hail from New Mexico and it is always so wonderful to see them return year after year! We also welcomed back long term guests Doug Schlink from Angler Adventures and his close friend Ray Zeiner, Gary Berenson from Massachusettes, Andrew Done from Switzerland, and many more from England, New York, Maine and Nova Scotia. We also welcomed to the Miramichi for the first time Simon Holme from Go Fishing Worldwide who works with clients in the UK and beyond to book salmon fishing adventures around the world including the beautiful Miramichi.
This week’s river report is not just about fishing though but also moose hunting! The annual 5 day New Brunswick moose hunt took place last week, an event that New Brunswickers and non residents alike look forward to each year. And by all accounts from Facebook many folks had a terrific hunt with a good number of beautiful bulls taken including our own Country Haven guest, Michael Madison from Buffalo, New York. Mike enjoyed his time with guides Tyler, Colby and Jamie and had an incredible hunt which culminated in the harvest of a beautiful New Brunswick bull moose making him and the guides a very happy group!
As the final weeks of the 2024 Atlantic Salmon season arrive, anglers are hoping for the catching to pick up after a slower than normal season due to extreme heat waves and lower than average water levels. As river temperatures have now returned to proper seasonal levels, the fall season is in full swing and we hope that the run picks up to bring in some big spawners which we need to reproduce and provide fry for future years ahead!
