The first week of the season presented some challenging conditions, with rising, coloured water adding an extra layer of difficulty for anglers. As we moved into the second week, the river dropped quickly, falling nearly a foot per day, and soon cleared to levels lower than we would typically expect for April. It’s a clear reminder of just how dynamic and ever-changing our river system can be.

Despite these shifts, some fish, both large salmon and Grilse, have been caught throughout the system. With rain now in the forecast - and already beginning as we write - a steady soaking and a welcome rise in water should help bring the river level back up again into more classic spring form while benefiting the surrounding landscape as well.

This past week, we were delighted to welcome back many returning guests to the Miramichi like Andy Krotinger from Massachusetts with an incredible 53-year history on these waters. We also had the pleasure of hosting Bill Mather and his wife Jane for his 18th spring season, celebrating his birthday in true river tradition. Alongside them, we introduced new visitors to the experience, many of whom are already looking forward to their return, drawn by the excitement of their first Atlantic Salmon, as well as the camaraderie, laughter, and shared stories that make Country Haven so special. Anglers joined us from four Provinces, eight States, and three Countries, a testament to the enduring global appeal of the Atlantic Salmon recreational fishery.

Brook Trout fishing has shown steady improvement over the past week, with more consistent catches being reported. Striped Bass are arriving in increasing numbers in the estuary each day, and Atlantic Salmon continue to be hooked throughout the system, even as far as 60 miles upstream, keeping anglers engaged and optimistic.

With a good rise in water, we’re confident that May will bring exciting opportunities for anglers pursuing the king of game fish, the Wild Atlantic Salmon, along with the vibrant Brook Trout and abundant Striped Bass.
