Both guides and sports alike agree that this has to be one of the coldest starts to spring fishing in years! It’s been a good season thus far although a bit up and down given the cold temps, rain and several raises of water. Speaking with guides and outfitters, the word is that plenty of fish are still being caught above Boiestown and Doaktown and many feel that this is reflective of solid summer and fall runs last year. We’ve caught several tagged fish already and received information on those fish from DFO. One of these salmon was from the July summer run and another was tagged downriver on October 26th which indicates that fish continue to come up the river well after the salmon season closes on Oct. 15th.

The cold water temperatures that we are currently experiencing seem to be keeping the fish from dropping out of the river at any significant rate which will enable our sports to continue to have a great spring fishing season, hopefully well into late May. While targeting salmon, our sports are now also hooking the occasional nice trout (catch & release) which is encouraging and we look forward to the sea run of trout sometime in May as well. Reports from downriver indicate that there are also alot of striped bass entering the system and many of them large ones. The official trout season (retention) opens on May 1st and sports can try their hand at a Miramichi Grand Slam … landing a salmon, a trout and a striped bass all in the same day!

It’s always nice to have return clients year after year and many have become like family to us. “Wild Bill” Mather and his lovely wife Jane have returned for there 14th season with Country Haven and as always, Bill is showing everyone how to get it done by limiting out many days using his own famous bunny strip flies.

The long range weather forecast calls for sun and warmer temperatures which will certainly be welcomed and with lots of salmon, trout and bass in the system, May this year could very well be one to remember! We still have a few days here and there available, so if interested in wetting a line, just give a ring, drop us an email or message us through our website and we will find a way to fit you or a group in! Click on any of the pics below to see larger photos … seeing fish pics just never gets old! Until the next river report … Tight Lines!
