July 13th, 2025
This past week, we were lucky to welcome an incredible group of guests from Florida, New Jersey, Michigan, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New Brunswick. Among them were some familiar faces and a few exciting new ones.
Longtime returning guest Rick Little from New Hampshire—known for tying some of the finest flies around—was back with us again. You can check out his work at https://shadcreekflies.com/ We also had the pleasure of hosting first-time visitor Alan Bourgault from Massachusetts, who brought along one of the most beautifully handcrafted nets we've ever seen. Take a look at his craftsmanship at https://alanjbourgaultwoodworks.com/
Most of the fishing continues to be concentrated on the main river, though we’re beginning to see—and catch—a few on the lower stretches of the Cains as well.
July has been, in many ways, a typical July on the Miramichi—very dependent on daily conditions. Good conditions bring good fishing, with fresh fish arriving on the tides. Poor conditions, however, can mean slower days, and even the odd day with no hookups at all. But things can change quickly here, and that’s all part of the experience.
The best news so far this season has been the strong return of grilse. We've already landed more grilse than we saw all of last season, which is a hugely encouraging sign. Some of our die-hard regulars say they’re more excited to catch grilse and parr than big salmon—because they know that’s the future of the Miramichi. (I might not go that far myself, but they make a good point!)

We’re looking forward to what the rest of July brings. As always, we’re grateful for the guests who return year after year—and those discovering the Miramichi magic for the first time.
