As the regulations for the Spring Fishery for Atlantic Salmon are officially changing on May 15 to the fishery regulations for the Bright Salmon Season, there are still Spring Salmon in the system. The river is now gradually transitioning and more Striped Bass are moving into the Miramichi. Their presence will slow the Salmon Fishing and make it more challenging for the Salmon Anglers, as once the Striper move in it becomes much more challenging for the Salmon to get a fly!
Looking back, the Spring Salmon season gave us plenty to be encouraged about. The run consisted largely of grilse, but several beautiful salmon were landed as well. River conditions kept everyone guessing, with water levels and clarity changing almost daily, from rising and dirty conditions to crystal clear water seemingly overnight. Despite those challenges, anglers adapted well and enjoyed some memorable days on the water.
What stood out most this spring was not only the fishing, but the people. Returning guests were already talking about next year before heading home, while first-time visitors quickly became friends and are already looking forward to their next trip. Once again, the Miramichi delivered the experience that keeps anglers coming back year after year.
Now the anticipation begins to build toward one of the most exciting times of the season: the arrival of the early bright salmon and the start of summer fly fishing in June.
The Miramichi remains one of the most unique river systems in the world, known for Wild Atlantic Salmon, Brook Trout, and Striper. Catching all three we call “The Miramichi Grand Slam”. With proper management and conservation efforts, the Miramichi River will remain one of the greatest fisheries for Atlantic Salmon in the world.
This season, Country Haven has also been proud to assist the ASF (Atlantic Salmon Federation) team by providing support for the Trap & Transport program for Smolt being moved around areas of high Striped Bass concentration. Giving these young Salmon a better chance on their journey to the ocean is an important step, and we are hopeful to see these efforts continue to expand in the future. Be sure to check out the short video below.
During our Spring Salmon season, we welcomed guests from more than 7 Countries, 13 States, and 5 Provinces - a remarkable reminder of what the Wild Atlantic Salmon mean to people from around the world and the draw they create for visiting our Province of New Brunswick. It was very nice to have awarded outdoor writer John Cleveland from Michigan and Patrick Walsh from Outdoor Canada with us this last week.
We will still be fishing throughout May and anyone who is interested in fly fishing for Stripers contact us.
