As another Miramichi Salmon Season comes to a close, the final week may have fizzled a bit in terms of hookups compared to recent weeks, but it was far from uneventful. Most of the fish we landed this week arrived fresh off the tides, with the best fishing coming on the very last day of the season. Several of the Grilse even carried sea lice—a clear sign that there were still fresh fish entering the system right up to the end, and likely more to come even after the season’s close, just like last year.

While hookups were fewer, there was no shortage of wonderful guests. Our Lodge was full of good company, with the majority of our anglers coming from the U.S., including several returning for their second trip of the season—and Rick Little from New Hampshire completing his third. As tradition holds, we closed out the year with the Ruckno Brothers group from the Wilkes-Barre area of Pennsylvania. Sadly, Brother Louie was missed around camp this time, having gone on to chase bigger fish in the sky. The group dedicated this trip to his memory, and his spirit was felt by all who knew him.

The Ruckno Group’s connection to the Miramichi runs deep—beginning 50 years ago at Tom Boyd’s Fishing Lodge and continuing for over 20 years now at Country Haven. It was a fitting and heartfelt way to wrap up another season on the river.

Most fish this week were hooked on black flies, ranging from small Bear Hair patterns to 2/0 Black Marabous. With perfect fall weather, ideal low-water conditions, and a fine group of fishermen to share it all with, it was the perfect way to finish a memorable season—especially compared to the final week of last year.

Here’s to the memories made, the friends we cherish, and to another great season on the Mighty Miramichi.
